CRM Research Report · June 2026 · Developer-Focused Businesses

Why this guide exists

An AI-run business is only as good as the data its agents can act on — and your CRM is where that data lives. Every lead, every deal, every customer conversation flows through it. When your CRM has a clean API and a programmable data model, agents can read from it, write to it, trigger automations, and close the loop without a human in the middle. Without it, you're just automating around the edges. A CRM isn't admin software. In an AI-run stack, it's the memory layer.

Most CRM comparison articles are written for salespeople. This one is written for developers and technical founders. The questions that matter here are different: Does the API have meaningful rate limits on affordable plans? Are custom objects gated behind enterprise pricing? Can we cancel Google Workspace and use the CRM's built-in mailbox? Is EU data residency actually configured by default, or is it a checkbox buried in settings?

We reviewed four of the most discussed CRMs of 2026 — Attio, Pipedrive, HubSpot, and Salesforce — and added a fifth: the fastest-growing developer-native CRM of the moment. The findings are sometimes counterintuitive.

⚠️ Custom objects: the developer dealbreaker

Custom objects — the ability to model your own data entities beyond standard contacts, companies, and deals — are essential for any developer-focused business. Without them, you're forced to work around a rigid schema or resort to messy field hacks. Cells highlighted in red below indicate where this capability is locked behind expensive tiers or unavailable entirely.

On AI phone answering specifically: none of these five CRMs answer calls natively at any accessible price point. Salesforce Agentforce Voice is the only native option but sits behind an Enterprise licence plus a £100–435/user/mo AI add-on. The practical approach for SMBs is a dedicated AI voice agent tool — Thoughtly, Kixie, or CloudTalk — that integrates with your CRM and writes call outcomes, transcripts, and deal updates back automatically. Thoughtly connects natively to all five CRMs on this list.

The fifth contender: Twenty

Twenty

⚡ Fastest growing developer CRM · Open-source · 40.6K GitHub stars

Twenty is the most interesting CRM to watch in 2026 if you're a developer-led business. Built as an open-source alternative to Salesforce and HubSpot, it has a Notion-inspired interface, a clean custom object data model, and a GraphQL + REST API you can extend however you like — because you own the code. It's the spiritual successor to the idea that your CRM infrastructure should be as programmable as your app infrastructure.

~£15/user/mo
Custom objects ✓ GraphQL + REST ✓ Self-hosted ✓ EU data sovereign ✓ No rate limits (self-hosted) No mobile app yet Workflows still maturing Needs DevOps for self-hosting Smaller native integration catalogue

Twenty's proposition is simple: if you're a technical team that would rather own your CRM stack than rent it, Twenty gives you a production-quality foundation to build on. The data model is clean, the API is well-documented, and the GitHub community is active enough that rough edges get smoothed out quickly.

The honest limitations: as of mid-2026, the workflow engine still lacks conditions and loops, there's no mobile app, and if you self-host you'll need someone comfortable with Docker and a deployment pipeline. Teams switching from Attio describe a similar mental model but with more control. Teams switching from HubSpot tend to miss the marketing automation depth.

Who Twenty is for: Technical founders who are comfortable with self-hosting, want zero API rate limits, need custom objects without paying enterprise prices, and want data sovereignty as a first-class property — not an add-on or a configuration menu. If that's you, it's worth a serious look.

Our verdict by team profile

Pick your CRM based on what you actually need

Developer team, custom data model, tight budget
Twenty (self-hosted, free) or Attio (free tier, 3 users). Both have custom objects without enterprise pricing.
Sales-led SMB, want to cancel Gmail
Pipedrive Growth + Fastmail (~£3/user/mo). Only CRM with a proper IMAP inbox that replaces Gmail.
Marketing + sales in one platform
HubSpot is the only realistic choice here. Accept the price jump to Pro and buy via a Solutions Partner to waive the onboarding fee.
Already know Salesforce, enterprise scale
Salesforce. Familiarity has real economic value. The Bulk API and AppExchange are genuinely unmatched at scale. Budget for admin overhead.
AI phone answering (any CRM)
Add Thoughtly, Kixie, or CloudTalk on top of your chosen CRM. None of the five handle inbound AI calling natively at SMB price points.
Best API for integrations, EU-based
Attio for API-first architecture. Pipedrive for ecosystem breadth. Twenty for no rate limits and full code ownership.
